How the Democratic nomination works
Each state holds a primary or caucus to award delegates. Delegates vote at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) national convention in the summer of 2028, and a candidate who wins a majority becomes the nominee.
The DNC's 2028 calendar opens with South Carolina on January 22, 2028, followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia in February, with Super Tuesday on March 7. The rest of the states follow through June.
