The four-year cycle

Why U.S. presidential elections happen every four years

The four-year gap is written into the Constitution and cannot be changed by ordinary law:

  1. A four-year term. Article II, Section 1 sets the president's term of office at four years. Because the term is fixed, the election that fills it recurs every four years.
  2. Fixed start and end dates. The 20th Amendment ends each term at noon on January 20 and begins the next one at the same moment, keeping the cycle exactly aligned from 2029 to 2033 to 2037 and onward.
  3. A single national Election Day. Federal law (3 U.S.C. Section 1), building on the Presidential Election Day Act of 1845, fixes Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each presidential year.
  4. Midterms fill the gap. Every even year also holds elections for the House (all 435 seats) and a third of the Senate. The even years alternate between presidential elections (2028, 2032, 2036) and midterm elections (2026, 2030, 2034).

So after the 2028 presidential election on November 7, 2028, the next one is exactly four years later: November 2, 2032.

In between

Midterm elections between the presidential years

There is a major federal election every two years. The ones that fall between presidential races are the midterms - no presidential candidate is on the ballot, but control of Congress is at stake:

  • 2026 midterms: Tuesday, November 3, 2026
  • 2030 midterms: Tuesday, November 5, 2030

The 2026 midterms are widely treated as the unofficial starting gun for the 2028 presidential race, since most contenders have said they will decide on a run only afterward.

Quick answers

Next presidential election: FAQ

When is the next presidential election after 2028?
The next U.S. presidential election after 2028 is Tuesday, November 2, 2032. Presidential elections are held every four years, so the 2028 election is followed by 2032, then 2036, and so on. Federal law (3 U.S.C. Section 1) sets each Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
When is the very next U.S. presidential election?
The very next presidential election is Tuesday, November 7, 2028. If you are asking what comes after that one, it is Tuesday, November 2, 2032. The 2028 race is nearer, and the 2032 race is one full four-year cycle later.
How often are presidential elections held?
Every four years. Article II of the Constitution sets the presidential term at four years, and the 20th Amendment fixes the start and end of each term at noon on January 20. Because the term is fixed at four years, the election recurs on the same four-year cadence: 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, and so on.
Is there any federal election between 2028 and 2032?
Yes. The 2030 midterm elections are held Tuesday, November 5, 2030. Midterms fall in the even years between presidential elections and decide all 435 U.S. House seats and about one-third of the Senate, plus many state and local offices. No presidential candidate is on a midterm ballot.
When would the winner of the 2032 election be inaugurated?
The winner of the November 2, 2032 election would be inaugurated at noon on Thursday, January 20, 2033, under the 20th Amendment. Inauguration Day always falls on January 20 following a presidential election.
Who can run in 2032?
It depends on who wins in 2028. Under the 22nd Amendment, a person may be elected president at most twice. A president first elected in 2028 could seek a second term in 2032; if a president is serving a second term, they are term-limited and cannot run again. Beyond that, every candidate must meet the Article II requirements: a natural-born U.S. citizen, at least 35 years old, and a U.S. resident for at least 14 years.
Why is Election Day always in early November?
The Presidential Election Day Act of 1845 standardized the date as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. November suited the 19th-century agrarian calendar (after the harvest, before deep winter), and the Tuesday rule avoided both Sunday worship and the first of the month, when merchants settled accounts. The date is federal law and does not change from cycle to cycle.
