Term Limit
A constitutional restriction capping the number of times a person can be elected to a particular office.
A term limit is a legal restriction on how many times a person may be elected to a given office. For the US presidency, the term limit is established by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, prohibits any person from being elected president more than twice. It also bars someone who has served more than two years of another president's term from being elected president more than once.
Term limits do not apply to members of Congress under federal law, though some states impose limits on their own legislative offices. The presidential two-term limit is the most prominent federal term restriction.
